Sato means Safe Toilets. These are plastic drop hole covers designed by a Japanese company called Lixil Corporation.
Since the introduction of sato pans in Malawi, Hygiene Village Project has facilitated installation of over 1,400 Sato pans in household toilets in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mulanje. Advantages of Sato pans include the following: Safe to use. Easy to clean, they are hygienic, they are smell free, flies cannot go through sato pans, they are easy to clean. They save water, the sato pans are safe for kids, they are durable and affordable.
